AWS Leadership Principles Interview Questions: What to Expect
AWS interviews use the same 16 Amazon Leadership Principles. How the bar applies to AWS and cloud roles, sample questions, and where to go deeper on each principle.
Updated August 12, 2026
If you're interviewing for AWS and searching for "AWS Leadership Principles" specifically, expecting a separate list from Amazon's, here is the short version: there isn't one. AWS is Amazon. Every AWS interview loop, from a Solutions Architect role in Seattle to an SDE role in Dublin, is evaluated against the exact same 16 Leadership Principles used across the entire company.
What does change for AWS and cloud-technical candidates is emphasis, not content. This guide covers what that means in practice.
AWS uses Amazon's 16 Leadership Principles, full stop
There is no AWS-specific principles document, no cloud-division variant, no separate rubric. Interviewers at AWS are trained the same way, assigned Leadership Principles before your loop the same way, and write evidence-based feedback on the same Strong Hire to No Hire scale as any other part of Amazon. If you've seen "AWS Leadership Principles" as a search result or a study guide title, it refers to this same list applied to AWS roles specifically.
For the complete breakdown of all 16, see the Leadership Principles interview questions guide. This page focuses on how the bar plays out for AWS and cloud-technical interviews specifically.
What actually differs for AWS roles
The loop structure is identical: a recruiter screen, one or more technical or domain rounds, then a full loop of four to six interviews including a Bar Raiser. What shifts is which principles get the most weight and what kind of stories score well.
- Dive Deep carries outsized weight in AWS technical loops. Distributed systems work rewards engineers who go past the dashboard and into logs, metrics, and root causes. See the Dive Deep guide for the question patterns.
- Are Right, A Lot shows up constantly in system design and architecture discussions, where judgment under incomplete information is the entire job. See the Are Right, A Lot guide.
- Invent and Simplify matters more than average, since infrastructure and platform teams are explicitly measured on removing complexity, not just adding features.
- Deliver Results and Insist on the Highest Standards are heavily probed for anything touching production reliability, since AWS customers depend on operational excellence directly.
- Customer Obsession and Earn Trust carry more weight for customer-facing AWS roles like Solutions Architects and Technical Account Managers, where the "customer" is often an external enterprise account.
Sample AWS-style Leadership Principle questions
- Tell me about a time a production system behaved unexpectedly at scale. How did you investigate?
- Describe a design decision where you had to weigh reliability against speed of delivery.
- Give me an example of simplifying an overcomplicated piece of infrastructure or a runbook.
- Tell me about a time you had to explain a complex technical trade-off to a non-technical stakeholder or customer.
- Describe an incident you were involved in. What was your specific role, and what changed afterward?
- Tell me about a time you disagreed with an architecture decision. What did you do?
These follow the same "Tell me about a time..." pattern as any Amazon behavioral question; see the full 48-question bank for the complete set across all 16 principles.
How to prepare for an AWS Leadership Principle interview
The preparation process doesn't change: build a bank of 8 to 12 STAR stories, tag each one to the principles it demonstrates, and practice answering out loud against adaptive follow-ups. For AWS and cloud-technical roles specifically, make sure your story bank includes at least two or three stories rooted in real technical depth, incidents, architecture trade-offs, or scale problems, since a purely process-oriented story bank will feel thin against AWS's emphasis on Dive Deep and Are Right, A Lot.
For the full week-by-week plan, see the Amazon interview preparation guide.
AWS interviews still end in the same debrief
However technical the loop feels, the hiring decision is still made in a written-evidence debrief led by a Bar Raiser, the same as anywhere else at Amazon. A brilliant system design answer with no individual Leadership Principle evidence attached will not carry a loop on its own. Treat every technical round as a behavioral round wearing a technical costume.
Practicing AWS-flavored Leadership Principle questions out loud, with real follow-up pressure, is what Bar Raiser AI is built for: adaptive voice mock interviews scored against Amazon's actual hiring bar, free to start.
